Are you a smoker? Quit now!
Smoking is the greatest single cause of illness and premature death in the UK. About 114,000 people die each year in this country due to smoking and the main causes of death are cancer, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and heart disease.
About half of all smokers will die from smoking-related diseases and if you are a long-term smoker then, on average, your life expectancy is about 10 years less than a non-smoker.
If you are a smoker you are not alone. Just over one in four adults in England smoke but seven out of ten say they want to stop and four in five wish they'd never started.
