Reducing healthcare associated infections and improving cleanliness in healthcare services remains one of the high priorities for NHS Hampshire. NHS Hampshire Healthcare associated infection annual report 2009/10 shows the work that has been undertaken over the last year and future work.

With the increase of care being delivered in a wide range of settings, the prevention and control of infections are an important part of health and social care delivery.

A healthcare associated infection is an infection, not present before but which develops during or immediately after admission to any healthcare facility, contact with healthcare professionals or outpatient visits, however there are some infections that occur in the community where there has been no healthcare contact.
