Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

MMR is the combined vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella. It is a tried and tested, safe and effective way to protect your children against these potentially serious diseases.

Measles is very infectious and needs only a slight contact for the virus to spread. Due to many years of low vaccine uptake, when a case of measles occurs in the community, it now has the potential to spread very rapidly.

Since the ‘MMR scare’ of the late 1990s more scientific evidence has proved beyond all reasonable doubt that there is no causal link between MMR vaccine and autism or bowel disorders. On the contrary, because of a decline in MMR vaccine over the past 10 years, the number of children suffering severe damage or death as a result of measles is increasing. Measles is once again a very real threat to our children.

Two injections are required to provide your child with full protection. If you are in any doubt as to whether your child has had 2 doses of MMR you should make an appointment with your GP. Having more than the necessary 2 doses is perfectly safe. Remember - it is never too late to be vaccinated.  You can find out more about MMR and all childhood vaccinations on the NHS Immunisation website.
