Getting your children vaccinated

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The Government recommends that all children in the UK are vaccinated against a number of infectious diseases. This is not only the best way of preventing your child from getting serious infectious diseases, but also when you vaccinate your child you are also helping to protect other people from infectious diseases - the more people who are vaccinated the safer it is for everyone.

In the UK, children are mainly vaccinated against 10 life-threatening illnesses:

  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
  • Polio
  • Haemophilus influenzae B (Hib)
  • Pneumococcus
  • Meningitis C
  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella

Before these vaccinations were available, hundreds of children in the UK suffered serious illness or even death each year because of these diseases. Measles is still one of the leading vaccine-preventable childhood killers in the world.
