Pneumococcal Vaccination

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Pneumococcal is a term used to describe infections caused by a particular germ (the pneumococcus) that can lead to a broad range of diseases in older people and young children. The most common of these are pneumonia and bronchitis.

Older people and very young children are most at risk, particularly those who are ill already or who are receiving treatment for a serious illness. The germ is spread by coughing, sneezing or close contact between people.

The pneumococcal vaccination can be given at the same time as the flu vaccination in your GP practice. It is a one-off vaccination and lasts for 10 years.

For more information, please contact your GP practice or you can call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or visit the NHS Immunisation website.
