You and your weight and healthy eating are key public health issues at the moment. Modern life can mean we’re not as active as our parents or grandparents once were.

Children play computer games or watch TV instead of playing outdoors and the number of hard manual jobs have declined dramatically thanks to modern equipment and inventions.

When we add in the wide availability of convenience food, it is not difficult to see why, as a nation, we are taking less care of our weight and what we eat.

But because we don't move about as much, or eat as well as we used to, nine out of ten children today could grow up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies. This can cause life-threatening diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease - so it’s really important that we do something about it.

The Change4Life campaign

In January 2009 a major new healthy living campaign was launched aimed at reducing the number of people, including children, who are obese. Known as Change4Life, the idea is to encourage families to change their lifestyles for the better through some helpful hints, tips, ideas and a dedicated helpline supported by trained advisors.

Full details can be found at the Change4Life website. We have also put together some helpful information and advice on these pages about you and your weight and healthy eating.
