Health in Hampshire

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

People in Hampshire are healthier than many other parts of the country, with life expectancy above the national average and increasing. But there are number of important issues that influence how we invest our resources:

  • Hampshire has an ageing population. By 2012 the number of over 65s will rise by 14%, compared to a general rise of 4% across all age groups
  • There are big differences in health across Hampshire. Gosport, for example, has the lowest life expectancy (falling below the 2004-06 national average), with people in Havant and Rushmoor also living shorter and less healthy lives. Rural deprivation is also a significant issue
  • Cardiovascular disease and cancer are the main causes of death in Hampshire. Together they are responsible for 55% of all deaths. The highest levels of mortality from these conditions are found in Gosport, Havant and Rushmoor
  • 20% of adults aged 16 and over smoke in Hampshire compared to 24% nationally. However, there is significant variation across the county with Gosport and Rushmoor equal to or surpassing the national rate. The highest prevalence of adult binge drinking is seen in Rushmoor, with the highest levels of harmful alcohol consumption being seen in Gosport flowed by Havant and Rushmoor
  • We have growing rates of obesity particularly among children which, if not addressed through prevention, could lead to significantly increased levels of heart disease and diabetes

The Association of Public Health Observatories publish health profiles for Hampshire. The latest profiles were published in July 2010.
