GPs

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Your doctor or general practitioner (GP) is normally your first point of contact when you have a health problem or are feeling unwell.

GPs provide consultations in practices and through home visits. Usually, a small group of GPs and nurses work together in a practice, often referred to as a surgery, clinic or health centre. GPs will assess your problem, offer advice and treatment and sometimes refer you for further treatment or investigation.

NHS Hampshire and GPs
NHS Hampshire commissions services for Hampshire residents from GP practices. Most GPs are not NHS staff, but are independent contractors providing their own premises and employing their own staff. NHS Hampshire works very closely with its GP partners, involving them in many aspects of service design and development. We also review the performance of local GPs in line with nationally-developed quality assurance standards.

You can find out about the performance of your practice on the NHS Information Centre website.

Finding a GP
If you are not already registered with a GP practice or want to find one near to where you live you can search on our Find a local service page.

Hampshire Healthcare Centre
In December 2009 we opened the new Hampshire Healthcare Centre which offeres a range of GP services to both registered and non-registered patients. For more information visit the Hampshire Healthcare Centre page.

GPs and out of hours care
The out of hours service is available when your GP surgery is closed and operates at night, over the weekend and on bank holidays.

Complaints about GPs
If you wish to make a complaint about your GP and the treatment you have received you can choose to either complain directly to the practice or to make your complaint to us.
