With freezing temperatures, snow and sleet predicted for the weekend by the Met Office, the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster is urging local residents to stay in, keep warm and not go out.

Dr Andrew Mortimore on behalf of the Directors of Public Health for the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster said:

“I’d urge local people to think twice before venturing outside if we get snow and ice over the weekend. If people do need to go out I’d ask them to be careful and ensure they are wearing appropriate footwear.

“Slips and falls can happen very easily in icy weather, and whether it’s a sprain or a more serious fracture it could put you out of action for a significant amount of time. So please think about the repercussions on your life before stepping out in freezing conditions. Be safe and only go outside if you really need to and are dressed appropriately.”

During cold weather it is important to remember:

  • Stay in and only go out if it is urgent. Many injuries, such as broken bones, can potentially be avoided if you stay away from icy paths
  • Only call 999 if it is a genuine emergency
  • Only travel to appointments, such as GP and hospital appointments, if it is safe to do so. If you can’t get there safely then phone the number on your appointment letter/card and staff will rearrange your appointment for you
  • There is a range of NHS service you can contact for advice or treatment
  • Keep a watchful eye on any vulnerable neighbours, friends and family.

If you do need help or advice the local NHS offers a range of emergency and non-emergency services.

For life threatening emergencies, always call 999. For less urgent matters, it is important to be aware of the choice of local NHS non-emergency services available including GP Health Centres, walk in centres, minor injuries units, GP Out of Hours services and pharmacies.
