That’s the message from the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster as the Met Office predicting cold weather all week.

“To keep healthy during the cold weather it is essential to keep warm. If your body temperature drops, then the risks of a heart attack, stroke or breathing difficulties increase. There are many ways to stay warm and healthy and making sure you dress and eat well and keep comfortably warm at home will help keep you well,” said Dr Jenifer Smith, on behalf of the Directors of Public Health for the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster. “It’s also great if you can keep a watchful eye on any vulnerable neighbours, friends or family.”

You can keep yourself warm by keeping at least one room in your house well-heated, having warm drinks and meals, wearing layers of warm clothing and only spending time outside if you really have to. If you need to go outdoors wear several thinner layers of clothing under your coat rather than one thick layer, wear gloves and don’t forget to put something on your head. Also, wear warm, dry, flat, non-slip shoes or boots to help you keep your grip on icy paths and pavements.

Keeping active can help keep you warm and it’s good for your general fitness and well-being too. So when indoors‚ try not to sit for more than an hour. Get up and walk around‚ make yourself a warm drink and spread chores throughout the day. Chair-based exercises and simply moving your arms and legs and wiggling your toes are helpful if walking is difficult.
