One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to eat better so if you need some inspiration, the new Supermeals campaign provides tasty ideas for healthier, affordable meals that are quick and easy to make, fitting in with busy lifestyles.

“We realise that families often want to lose weight and get fit after the festive season, but are also watching the pennies,” said Dr Ruth Milton on behalf of the directors of Public Health for the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster.  “Help is at hand with the new online Supermeal zone which contains a seven day meal planner with lots of ideas. You can also arrange for recipes to be emailed to you during the campaign. Eating better and becoming more physically active can significantly improve your health and the Supermeals can help you make small easy changes that will benefit all your family.”

In the Supermeals zone on the Change4life website you can get a cook book of recipes that will feed four people for less than £5.  The cookbook has been produced with Ainsley Harriot, an ambassador for the campaign, and includes two new recipes of his own. He also demonstrates how to cook one of the recipes on a video clip and talks about the benefits of planning meals in advance.

On the site you can create a shopping list and find out where you can save money on Supermeal ingredients at supermarkets across the area.

The campaign comes as new research from Change4Life shows that UK households can save an average of £1,500 a year and eat healthier by simply planning their weekly supermarket shop. The detailed two week shopping and eating survey of 20 households showed that simple steps such as writing a shopping list and planning weekly meals can save both purse pounds and lbs from your waist too. Families also found that they spent £15 less on takeaways per week and snacked less.
