The local NHS is asking people to take part in an important new study that aims to discover if health services are being offered fairly to the many diverse communities living in Southampton, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth.

In particular, it wants to know the views of people whose experiences have been affected by their age, ethnicity, religion or belief, a disability or long-term health condition, their sex or gender, their sexual orientation, being pregnant or breast feeding, or if they are transgender. All people have to do is fill-in an easy to complete and confidential online questionnaire.

The survey seeks views on health services in the community, like seeing a dentist or a GP; staying in hospital; and mental health services. It also asks questions to find out a little bit about the individual completing the survey form.

The questionnaire is available online. Residents who do not have internet access and would like a survey sent to them to complete can call the Communications and Engagement Team on 023 8029 6053 for a copy. The deadline for completed survey forms is January 31, 2012.

“The local population is very diverse and we are keen to get the views of a wide range of residents on their experience of the NHS to help us improve services,” said Rob Dalton, director of corporate affairs for the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCTs Cluster.

“We use the results from a range of surveys but recognise that there is more we can do to reach out to and hear the views of all parts of our local population. This is particularly important when evidence shows that some people face additional difficulties or barriers that hinder their efforts to improve their health or use health services.

“We are determined to ensure that the services provided by local NHS organisations are of the highest quality and meet the needs of all local residents. Having the views of people from all walks of life is very valuable as it helps us to understand what is working well and where we need to concentrate on making improvements.”
