That was the topic when two Directors from NHS Hampshire took part in the NHS Alliance Annual Conference this week.Dr Stuart Ward, clinical director, and Helen Clanchy, director of primary care were invited to share how NHS Hampshire is working with its Practice Based Commissioning (PBC) Localities to introduce services that are closer to peoples homes and help to achieve the best outcomes possible for patients.Practice Based Commissioning (PBC) Localities is where groups of GPs work together to introduce schemes that bring NHS care such as men’s health, phlebotomy (blood taking) and dermatology into local communities. The idea behind this way of working was first introduced to the NHS in 2005 and since then Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) have been working with GP practices to turn it into a reality. “We have worked very closely with our GP practices to make sure PBC becomes a fundamental way in which we make sure that services available to local people are right for their needs,” said Helen Clanchy, director of primary care. “One of the best ways to do this is to give some of the responsibility to local doctors who know the needs of their patients. They are also working hard to find out what their patients think and take these views on board when deciding what services their patients need and how these should be provided.” “Being invited to give a presentation at a national conference and share what we have achieved in Hampshire is really exciting and a tribute to the amount of work that has been put in by everyone involved,” Helen continued.
