The local NHS is attending a series of events across the county in the run up to Christmas to help people ‘choose well’ if they need urgent medical help this winter. Southampton, Hampshire and Portsmouth’s Primary Care Trusts will be working together to attend pre-Christmas events in towns and cities.

Staff will be raising awareness of the range of NHS services available for unexpected illness and injuries as they talk to shoppers and revellers about healthcare. They will also be working with local radio stations and South Central Ambulance Service to spread the message wider still.

The events will be taking place throughout November and into early December.

• Thursday 17 November 2011, Cascades Shopping Centre, Portsmouth with Heart FM
• Thursday 17 November 2011, Winchester Guildhall, with The Breeze
• Thursday 17 November 2011, Southampton City Centre, with The Breeze
• Friday 18 November 2011, West Quay, Southampton with South Central Ambulance
• Saturday 19 November 2011, Eastleigh Town Centre, with The Breeze
• Sunday 20 November 2011, West Street, Fareham with The Breeze
• Thursday 24 November 2011, Gunwharf Quays with Heart FM
• Thursday 1 December 2011, Marlands Shopping Centre, Southampton with Heart FM
• Saturday 3 December 2011, Festival Place, Basingstoke with Heart FM
• Friday 9 December 2011, Winchester Cathedral, with South Central Ambulance

“It is important that people understand the various NHS services available locally to them. They are then better able to decide which service they should go to if they need help with, or are worried about their health. There are a range of options such as Minor Injury units and walk in centres as well as the local Pharmacist. The Choose Well message brings together all of this information and tells people when these services are open and the expertise of the staff based there,” said Dr Stuart Ward, medical director for the Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth PCT Cluster.

Dr Ward added; “We want to ensure that people have the background knowledge of their choices and give them information they can take away and refer to in future”.
